The Legend of Mount Cristallo
A long time ago, there was a castle on Mount Cristallo, home to a princess with eyes as blue as the sky. Many princes tried to win her heart, but none of them could pass her test: to tell her a story about herself that was new, believable and different from all the others. One day, Bertoldo, a humble shepherd who was in love with her, arrived at the castle. He told her about a time in the Fields of the Blessed, where the princess was a beloved queen and he was her faithful shepherd. An angel rewarded their goodness by granting each of them a wish: Bertoldo wished for the queen to keep the light of her eyes on Earth, and she wished for her greatest desire to come true. When the story ended, the princess offered him her hand: both their wishes had been granted.
Monte Cristallo (3,221 m), also known as Croda de Bertoldo, is one of the most majestic peaks in the Ampezzo Dolomites. It was first climbed by the Viennese mountaineer Paul Grohmann, together with the Ampezzo guides Angelo Dimai and Santo Siorpaes.
